General Demographic statistics:
1. American Factfinder: factfinder.census.gov/ It is linked from
the Gov Pubs U.S. Census page [Gov Pubs - U.S. Census - American
Factfinder]
From the left menubar select FACT SHEET. Fill in the address
search
form with the CITY and STATE only. Hit Go. This will give you
basic
information about the population of the city: total population,
race,
education, median household income, etc.
Drug and Alcohol Abuse statistics:
1. Rand California: Select Statistics - health and socioeconomic
-
drug and alcohol abuse statistics. They must read the choices
carefully and decide which categories are of interest to them.
The
lower section contains boxes for selecting a city in California.
2. Community Indicators of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Risk. Typing
this
title into CRUZCAT will give you a link to the Santa Cruz County
report. To find reports from other counties go to:

Homeless Statistics:
1. If the student is looking at homeless anywhere in Santa Cruz
county, they should use "Life in Santa Cruz County: Community
Assessment Project...Year 8". McH & Gov Pubs Ref HN79.C22
S45 2002.
Indicator 97 p.213+ discusses homeless in the county with a breakdown
by geographic area.
2. American Factfinder: Select PEOPLE from the left menubar.
Find a
city as above. Look at the first box of results (Basic
Counts/Population) Scroll down to "Group Quarters Population
by Age
and Sex." The term "homeless" does not appear in
the Census,
instead, look for Noninstitutionalized Group Quarters. In this
table, look for the section titled "Type of Group Quarters".
The
last line under the section "Other noninstitutionalized group
quarters" gives the best count of homeless in a given city.
