The image conflates two typical images of Jerome, one working on his Vulgate translation of the Bible (usually shown in his study) and Jerome in the wilderness as a penitent aescetic or hermit. This image compresses both, along with the presence of the lion that Jerome has helped by removing a thorn from its paw. Note too the emblem of the cardinal's hat, also a symbol asssociated with this famous Church Father.
