Page showing St. Jerome in the wilderness. The image conflates two typical images of Jerome, one working on his Vulgate translation of the Bible (usually shown in his study) and Jerome in the wilderness as a penitent aescetic or hermit. This image compresses both, along with the presence of the lion that Jerome has helped by removing a thorn from its paw. Note too the emblem of the cardinal's hat, also a symbol asssociated with this famous Church Father.
