Work Party Options
You
may participate in other restoration work parties but you should clear them
with Dr. Holl before participating.
Remember that you need to do a 1-page write-up about what you learned
from the experience within a week of completing your work party to get
credit. If you learn of other work party
opportunities please send the information to kholl@ucsc.edu
so it can be posted. If you cannot make
a Saturday or Sunday work party please let me know early in the quarter and I
can arrange with a land manager for you to work on a restoration project at
another time.
Please
wear long pants and close-toed shoes.
Bring work gloves, water, a snack, sun screen, and a jacket (it can be
breezy at the coastal sites). SHOW UP ON
TIME or the groups will have left to go to a field site.
California
Native Plant Society Habitat Restoration restoration
days
Work with Linda Brodman of CNPS to remove exotic plants in California State Parks. Generally, CNPS has workdays twice a month on Saturdays. Look at www.cruzcnps.org for future dates. Contact Linda Brodman - 831.462.4041, redwdrn@pacbell.net – for more information. Dates in the next couple months include:
Quail Hollow Ranch County Park
Time to return to this sweet spot of a park, one of
our county's crown jewels -- the sandhills. Hoping for forecasted rain this week, and a
successful head start on continued eradication efforts of invasive,
non-native, Genista monspessulana (French broom). An additional
undertaking at Quail Hollow Ranch was featured in the Santa Cruz Sentinel on
Sunday, highlighting removal of invasive yellow water-weed in the local pond.
Volunteers are helping to restore the pond for habitat for the western pond turtle (Clemmys marmorata).
Hope to see you out there.
Directions to Quail Hollow: Take Graham Hill Road from Santa Cruz. As you come
down the hill into Felton, turn right at the first light in town called E. Zayante Road. Drive up E. Zayante
Road about 2 miles, and turn left on Quail Hollow Road. The park entrance
is on the right side about a half mile up the road. Meet in the gravel parking
lot on the left side of the entrance road.
FUTURE PROJECTS: Mark your calendars!
