Transferring files using Fugu
Fugu can be downloaded from http://rsug.itd.umich.edu/software/fugu/.
Note: The following instructions are for uploading files to course websites at the hostname ic.ucsc.edu, which should only be used by faculty.
If you are a student, staff, or faculty member who wants to upload files to your UCSC account (personal webspace at http://people.ucsc.edu), you must use SFTP to sftp.ic.ucsc.edu.
IMPORTANT UPDATE:
As of August 6, 2008 server changes will require you to follow these steps to allow a connection to your course website on ic.ucsc.edu. Your past application usage will retain obsolete Remote Host Access key information preventing a connection to ic.ucsc.edu. Follow these steps to change the host key.
Note: If you are connecting for the first time, you may proceed to step one of the original tutorial.
- Launch Fugu. On the menu at the top, click
Fugu and then Preferences.

- Select
Known Hosts (Icon with a monitor with a check mark in it). The Known Hosts screen will show you a list of the servers you connected to in the past. You should see an entry for www.ic.ucsc.edu and/or ic.ucsc.edu. Select these lines and click the Delete button.

- Click the
Save button.
- At this point you should be able to connect normally using either (http://www.ic.ucsc.edu/)www.ic.ucsc.edu or ic.ucsc.edu.
Note: This procedure solves the problem for both Fetch and Fugu.
You will now be able to connect normally.
If you should have any questions or need guidance, feel free to contact the FITC staff for help at (831) 459-5506.
- Launch Fugu. Typically it is in the
Applications folder, under Internet Tools.
- A dialog box will appear on your screen. Enter the name of the server to which you want to connect (in this case, ic.ucsc.edu) in the
Connect To field. Enter your username in the username field. Click Connect.

- A dialog box will appear to ask for your password. Enter your password and click
Authenticate.

- If you have entered the correct information, Fugu will connect to the server, and the main window will look like this:
The left half of the window allows you to select files and directories locally (on your computer), while the right half allows you to do the same on the IC server (on the web).
First, use the right window to browse to the location to which you would like to upload your files. If the files you are uploading are for your course's website, this will likely be somewhere within the public_html directory.
Next, in the left window, browse to the file(s) that you want to transfer, and highlight them by clicking on them. Once you're happy with your selection, upload the files by dragging them from the left window to the right window.
Your file(s) should now be on the server.
