Transferring files using Fetch

Table of Contents

Note: The following instructions are intended for uploading files to course websites at the hostname ic.ucsc.edu, which should only be used by faculty.

However, the same steps are applicable if you are a student, staff, or faculty member who wants to upload files to your UCSC account (personal webspace at http://people.ucsc.edu), you must use SFTP to sftp.ic.ucsc.edu.

Starting up Fetch

  1. Launch Fetch. Go to the desktop, double click the Applications folder, and find Fetch.

  2. A dialog box will appear on your screen prompting for login information. Here is a guide to each of the following fields:

Hostname: Enter the name of the server to which you want to connect.
Username: Enter your UCSC username (ie: email address user)
Connect Using: Click on the drop-down menu and select SFTP for a secure file transfer.
Password: Enter your UCSC username password (ie: cruzmail password)

Click connect after you have entered in the correct information in the fields above.

  3. If you have entered the correct information, Fetch will connect to the server and the main window will look similar to this:

    Fetch logged in

This window represents the location where your files will be uploaded.

  4. If the files you are uploading are for your course's website, you will have to move into the public_html directory. Double click it to change directories.

Uploading

Uploading is the term used when placing your data onto the web server. There are two ways to upload with Fetch.

Uploading with the PUT function

Fetch has function named "Put" that allows you to select files you want to upload via browsing.
  1. At the toolbar near the top of the window, find the Put button.

    Fetch Uploading with PUT

  2. Browse to the file(s) that you want to transfer.

    Fetch Uploading with PUT

Highlight them by clicking on them. If you want to upload multiple files at once, hold down the function (Apple) key or shift key. Once you're happy with your selection, click Put at the bottom right-hand corner of the window.

  3. Your file(s) will now be added onto the server. To double-check this, make sure your files are added to the folder as seen below.

Uploading via dragging

Dragging can be a lot quicker than browsing with PUT if you have all of your files in front of you. All you have to do is open up the folders containing your files and drag them into the Fetch window.
  1. Open up the folder (or desktop) containing the file(s) you want to upload.
  2. Select the file(s) you want to upload to the server
  3. Click and drag these files from your folder and drop them into the Fetch window. This will automatically upload your files onto the server.

Your file(s) will now be added onto the server.
