About this test |
The exam consists of 5 sections; each section corresponds to Spanish levels 1-5. However, it is possible to place beyond level 5 or 6, and this is determined by the quality of your essay in section 5. Based on your score (calculated as you submit each section), you will either continue on to the next section or the exam will end. Any dishonest attempt to try to place at a higher level (i.e., by asking someone else to take the exam for you) will only be detrimental to your placement, and may jeopardize your academic performance at the incorrect level. |
Getting Started |
To take the test, you must be using a modern, graphical browser such as Netscape Navigator 3.x or higher or Internet Explorer 5 or higher. For best results, close all other applications except for your browser and whatever internet connection software you may have. You must also have the QuickTime Browser Plugin installed. This exam uses QuickTime audio for certain questions. The first thing you must do is log in. You will need to provide your Name, Email, and Student Identification #. Enter this information carefully, because if you need to log back in you must provide the exact same information you did the first time. Next, you will be presented with a questionnaire. Please fill it out with as much detail as possible. This will NOT be automatically graded. |
Taking the test |
This placement test is part multiple choice and part essay questions. Multiple choice answers are either checkboxes or pull-down menus. If you do not select an answer, you cannot receive points. When you have finished filling out a page of the exam, press the SUBMIT button on the bottom of the page. Press SUBMIT only once. The test may take a moment to process your answers. Essay answers are typed into a text box. Essays are limited to 75 words. Essays longer than 75 words will be truncated. ATTENTION! If you are taking the Spanish Placement Exam at a computer lab on campus, you will need to use headphones. The computers at the McHenry Library Language Lab have headphones. |
Time limit |
Starting from the time you begin taking the exam, you will have three days to complete it. You will be placed at the level you were working when that length of time elapsed. |
If something goes wrong |
If your browser crashes, or your test is otherwise interrupted, don't fret! All is not lost! In the case of a software crash, restart your machine, then return to this instructions page. Follow the link at the bottom of this page, and log in Just like you did the first time. The test will resume as normal. The testing software remembers your progress, and you may log back in and resume the test on the same page you were on before. You must supply the exact same login information that you originally used. Unfortunately, you will have to re-input any information that wasn't submitted prior to your interruption (i.e., If your browser crashed while you were filling out page 3, you must fill out page 3 again, but not page 2 or 1). |
Finishing the test |
If, in any given section of the test, you fail to score the minimum number of correct answers, your test is finished and your placement appears on the screen. NOTE: Your placement result will be be sent to the Registrar's office for processing into AIS; this process generally takes 3-4 days. Once your placement is recorded in AIS, you will be able to enroll in any open section at the level you were placed. You will not be able to enroll in any other level of Spanish. |
